WEEK 5: LECTURE
Figure 1.1: Week 5's class session (20th September 2021)
In this week's class session, the lecture session was started and we were briefly taught about the development of poster design. After going through the lecture slides, Mr. Fauzi Yusoff gave a few announcements on the previous task (physical and digital collage submission) and also about the new task that was assigned (Project 2 & 2B). However, we would only need to come up with our research ideas and inspirations for the poster design which will be based on the theme 'mental health'. Then, the practical session was explained and we were assigned to use the Adobe Photoshop software to manipulate and edit the Shazam character into the given background (Hearst Mansion), and then doing the same with our own portrait.
Lecture (Week 5)
Poster is a conventional medium to convey information to the target audience. There can be many ways of delivering messages and stories through a poster such as an example of generating awareness on a particular issue. To engage this poster design to more viewers or to attract attention, they must be very well composed and stand out amongst other posters.
Figure 2.1: An illustration of a simple poster
Speaking about the idea of delivering messages through posters, we must first ask questions about:
- Is this poster for brand awareness?
- Is it an advertising poster?
- Is it a public service announcement poster? (having the objective to raise awareness)
With all the ideas and questions brainstormed, we can then proceed to research deeper into our topic and define the concept behind it. Some sketches and drafts can then be developed.
- study and gather related information
- write a summary about the chosen topic
- highlight the key points
- define the title
- define the slogan
- define the details
- define the call to action

Practical (Week 5)
In week 5's practical session, it was an interesting task because we get to learn and try out the use of Adobe Photoshop to crop a character into any background/location in a realistic way. In the given files, we were assigned to put the Shazam character and make it look like he is leaning against a wall in the Hearst Mansion. (Link) A video tutorial supplied by Mr. Martin is also available for us to view and learn how to complete this task. (Link) Then, we did the same thing again but with our own self-portrait picture.
